What is Integrated Movement Therapy (IMT)?

IMT is a one-on-one holistic therapy framework that is based in yoga and neuroscience and informed by conventional mental health perspectives. Sessions include a variety of approaches and methods including movement, mindfulness, creative exercises, and spiritual practices to create conditions for growth and healing. IMT serves individuals with all challenges on the human spectrum, specifically those with complex challenges, with a highly individualized approach to support the needs of each client. My areas of specialty are anxiety and nervous system regulation, and chronic conditions such as autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, and chronic pain.

IMT’s holistic approach is based on three overarching philosophies:

  •  The client is already perfect and whole

  •  The client and therapist are both unlimited in their potential for healing

  •  No part of the body/mind/spirit complex, and no part of the brain, works alone.

And six core principles:

  • Structure and continuity

  • Physical stimulation

  • Language stimulation

  • Social interaction

  • Self-calming

  • Direct self-esteem building

Who benefits from IMT?

Many people who have benefited from IMT are just “regular” people needing some support as they move through a difficult time. No matter your age, your ability, your struggle, IMT can help you and facilitate your growth. IMT is particularly beneficial for those seeking support for complex challenges such as chronic illness, anxiety, pain, injury, trauma, emotional challenges, grief, depression, or other challenging life circumstances.

What does an IMT session look like?

IMT sessions are highly individualized to meet the needs of each client. Usually clients participate in IMT sessions once a week or every other week. The length of the sessions are 60 minutes, with the exception of the initial session which is 75 minutes. A typical IMT session includes checking in/talking, grounding & centering, movement, creative and exploratory activities, and always concludes with rest.

IMT is based on structure and continuity, as well as partnership between the client and therapist, so it is rarely “completed” in one session. Beginning with an intro pass that includes three sessions is recommended.
